Let’s talk make-up for a second. But before that, I feel as though a disclaimer is needed – I’m not a professional make-up artist or a seasoned beauty guru and this is not a paid promotion! This is simply me sharing a little beauty hack based on a FAQ that’s been on my list for the longest time and I didn’t know whether I would create a video or a post… I figured I will do both but I will start with this post right here. Get into it below.
So, between YouTube and Instagram beauty tutorials, beauty gurus around the world seem to have all the hacks, way to many for me to keep up with but the truth is, I didn’t need any of that to discover my current favourite foundation.
About a year ago, I went on a mission to find a foundation that complimented my dry skin type. I found that the even though I came across a few drug store and high end foundations, due to my dry skin the finish always looked somewhat cakey when all I wanted was a dewy, minimal glow … wait, I lie, I wanted to GLOW FOR THE GODS!!! Let me live guys lol… For a while I felt that I was asking for way too much. Until I came across one of those “foundation equivalent charts“, for those of you who are not familiar – get familiar! Equivalent charts assist you in finding the closest proximity in colour across many brands. My current brand at the time had just discontinued their oil-base foundation, so I needed to find a solution fast as I needed to restock really soon. Through the equivalent chart, I decided that I was going to do a process of elimination with the first 3 brands that were presented to me on the chart, that weren’t only accurate in colour but also content (no need to mention the other brands).
Trial and Error
The first one I tried, I was happy with it, except suddenly the shade was extremely difficult to find locally… one sales lady told me straight up “we don’t normally stock these dark shades”, for a moment there I was so curious to really understand what she meant by that but then I realised why bother… immediately I was put off by the brand all together, I’d rather spend my hard earned money else where – to which I did.
Next up on my list was the NARS SHEER GLOW foundation, looked up the brand and just like that the product description had me at:
“A glowing, natural radiant finish foundation with sheer and buildable coverage that immaculately evens skin tone. Replete with skincare benefits and the NARS Complexion Brightening Formula, it leaves skin hydrated, more luminous, softer and smoother…
For normal, normal-to-dry and dry skin types
Hydrates for softer and smoother skin
Contains powerful anti-oxidants to protect against damaging free radicals and turmeric extract to improve skin’s radiance and tone
Streamlined packaging with ergonomic twist cap.
Dermatologist tested. Non-comedogenic. Fragrance free.”
My reaction as you would all imagine – Yassss mama! That’s it, that’s what I’m looking for… add to basket, checkout … come on home baby!
All black package, this to me was the first sign that a new love affair was brewing. Opened and tried it… I fell instantly in love with the texture, the light-weight hydration and finally the dewy effect I’d longed for all this time – NB. Beauty blenders are key to achieving the dewy look in my opinion.
Drugstore vs. High End Foundation
Here’s the thing though, as much as I love this foundation, it is a little pricey, it certainly is a great brand to go for if you’re feeling a little fancy and for the slightly higher price point you’ll walk away with a foundation that’s totally effortless to apply with flawless blending and weightless full coverage. With that said, I’m still on a hunt for the same effects but in lower price point (drugstore brand), I’ve heard that a few good ones exist out there and it’s a matter of seeking until you find… of which when I do, I will share with you all.
50 shades of Melanin
Still on the topic of NARS, I must include that it is a great option for darker skin tones. The undertones of each shade are so complimentary that you almost wonder what the difficulty really is with other brands. Surely, it can’t be rocket science. Apart from the foundations, they offer amazing concealers with the most perfect shades… if you have the budget, go ahead and splurge – Thank me later!
Where to find…
*SIGH* – I dreaded getting to this part because NARS to my knowledge isn’t available in South Africa yet, but they do ship worldwide and they are available at SEPHORA. Also, speak to your local make-up connect to import, just be sure to use the foundation equivalent charts to get the right shade.
Hope you’ve all enjoyed this post, I will do a video in the coming weeks to show and tell.
Until the next post…
